Apart from “It gives them a chance to beat the Europeans” are there any other reasons for why the South American clubs actually care about the Club World Cup? It seems like a non-event to me.

probably better it ended here as he at least goes out a ‘winner’ of sorts with the league cup. aside from handling the suarez affair appallingly badly, he never really got to grips with an extremely difficult job. the fans’ idea of ‘bringing the good old days back was always a loser, based on sentimentality rather than rationality.

i think the club will look at a big name from the continent. the job would be an enormous step up in all respects (especially managing expectations) for rodgers or martinez. i really rate martinez, but i just can’t imagine him pulling that job off (at the moment) to be honest. if he gets it, i hope he proves me wrong, as he seems a great bloke.

atletico were really professional, they got it perfect tactically. huge credit to simeone.
i really felt for athletic bilbao though, i’ve watched almost every game in their run to the final, and they were magnificent up until the final. susaeta and muniain have been a joy to watch. being honourable losers is always the worst thing. good luck to them in the copa del rey final.

“..gaining back-to-back wins over host nation Qatar and Iraq,” Bahrain did not defeat Qatar; the Bahrainis came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw in that match. Anyway, I hope earning their 1st title in a competition will give Bahrain national team the confidence they need to get better and better! Congrats Bahrain, you deserve it!

A terrible shame to hear of his tragic death. It seemed that he such a bright future especially after his success with the Wales team, but we forget that this is football. We all have lives to live and we all have the same demons to overcome.

There obviously was something in his life that he was unhappy about. I can only hope that enough people paid attention to what he was dealing with, whatever that may have been.
