Defending champions Iraq qualified for the quarter-final stages of the 2011 AFC Asian Cup along with Group D winners Iran as the full line-up for the next round is known.

Iraq got through a tough tie against North Korea on Wednesday with a slender 1-0 win thanks to a 22nd minute Karrar Jassim goal. Iran were being held in their final group match by the United Arab Emirates before Arash Afshin’s 70th minute opener opened the floodgates for the group leaders. Iran, who had only needed a point in any case to win the group, finished the job with a strike from Mohammed Morui and a Walid Abbas own goal giving them a 3-0 win.
