Spain: Barcelona claim 21st championship
FC Barcelona have won a third successive league title, their 21st overall, with a 1-1 draw away at Levante UD securing the point they needed to seal the title. They currently lead the table from Real Madrid by eight points with just two games to play.
Mali international Seydou Keita scored Barcelona’s goal in the 28th minute only to see Felipe Caicedo equalize five minutes before half-time after a defensive mix-up between Gerard Pique and keeper Victor Valdes. Nonetheless the draw helped the Catalan giants seal the ninth trophy since 2008-09 under the tutelage of coach Pep Guardiola.
Once again Lionel Messi was the player of the season for the Blaugrana having so far notched 31 goals in La Liga this term, only Cristiano Ronaldo scoring more. But with plenty of goals from all areas this Barcelona team continually threatens to dominate the game for years to come and, with the domestic title sealed, allows Guardiola to rest his players ahead of the club’s date at Wembley Stadium against Maanchester United in the UEFA Champions League final on May 28th.
