Belgium: Genk secure maiden Super Cup win (+video)

Belgian league champions Racing Genk celebrated a maiden Super Cup triumph last night when defeating Belgian Cup winners Standard Liege by a 1-0 scoreline. The champions had home advantage and made the best use of it despite going down to ten men in the 28th minute after forward Jelle Vossen was sent off. The only goal of the game came on the stroke of half-time and it was a quality strike from the left boot of Hungarian midfielder Dániel Tőzsér. The Cristal Arena was barely a third full for the match with just 7,000 turning up for the season’s curtain raiser which was a shame as the goal deserved a bigger stage in which to be appreciated. Nevertheless the win meant that Genk had finally put their record of five straight defeats in this competition to bed having lost three years in a row from 1998-2000 as well as 2002 and 2007. Now the champions can concentrate on the new league season, which begins next weekend, and an opening day home fixture against Beerschot whilst Standard Liege will open their account with an away tie at RAEC Mons.

RSC Anderlecht won the Belgian Super Cup on Friday night beating K.A.A. Gent 1-0 in Brussels

Current Belgian champions RSC Anderlecht won the Belgian Super Cup on Friday night after a goal from Cheikhou Kouyaté was enough to give Les Mauves a 1-0 victory in their own Stade Constant Vanden Stock in Brussels against Belgian Cup holders K.A.A. Gent. The victory means that Anderlecht have won the Super Cup for the ninth time in the club’s history with only arch-rivals Club Brugge having won it more times. K.A.A. Gent, on the other hand, have still yet to triumph in the competition after losing both times they’ve participated. The goal came on the half-hour mark with Anderlecht breaking on the counter attack following a Gent corner kick. The ball was played to Lucas Biglia in the midfield who ran into the opposition half with it before passing the perfect through ball to Kouyaté who coolly put it past the keeper first time rather than go around the keeper which, to some observers, looked more likely from the position he was in. The game was played a week before the new Jupiler League season kicks off and the opening day will see champions Anderlecht at home to newly promoted AS Eupen whilst Gent, who finished the 2009-10 season in third place, start their campaign away at KSC Lokeren OV.
